Private infantry regiment. Italy, 1859

The Austro-Italian-French War or the Second War of Independence of Italy was a war between France and Sardinia on the one hand and the Austrian Empire on the other. Until 1861 there were several independent states on the territory of Italy. The north-eastern part of Italy was under the rule of the Habsburg Austrian Empire.

During the war and the subsequent landing of Garibaldi's troops in Sicily, the Kingdom of Sardinia merged with Lombardy, Tuscany, Romagna, Parma, Modena and the Kingdom of both Sicilies. The Sardinian Kingdom (Piedmont) with its capital in Turin included the principality of Piedmont, the duchies of Aosta, Genoa, Monferrat, Savoy and the county of Nice, and the island of Sardinia. It was the largest and economically developed state on the territory of the Apennine peninsula, which played a decisive role in the unification of Italy.
In the middle of the 19th century, the Sardinian linear infantry consisted of 2 guards and 18 army regiments, reduced to 10 brigades with 2 regiments each. The soldier is dressed in a gray overcoat with white buttonholes and buttons, white trousers and brownish leggings on lacing. Belt ammunition made of white leather. On the copper belt, the cross is made of white metal. On the right side is a wooden jar, on the left sword with a copper hilt. The black cartridge bag hangs from the back of the belt. To the knapsack is attached a bowler and a coarse roll. Shaver-shako in a black waterproof case has a round cake with company and battalion distinction, and the figure is the regiment number. A rifle with an attached bayonet has a white shoulder strap.
