Landsknecht (German Landsknecht) is a German hired Renaissance infantryman. Landsknechts were hired mainly from representatives of the lower class (poor peasants) as opposed to noble knights, although the latter often occupied the posts of higher officers in the lansknetkht units. In addition, the Landsknechts were a kind of "German response" to the Swiss infantry. Like any mercenaries, during the war, the Landsknechts did not shun robbery and robbery. It was believed that the Landsknecht earned a month more than the farmer - for a year.
Since in battles often mercenaries appeared on both sides of the conflict, looking exactly alike in order to distinguish "their" from "outsiders" in hand-to-hand combat, lansquenets belonging to the same company wore wide cloths of the same color on the hat, as a bandage on the shoulder, or a sling over shoulder. This gave an occasion to call each company lansknehts gang of the corresponding color (from the German das Band - tape). And thanks to the behavior of the Landsknecht against the civilian population, the word "gang" in European practice acquired a new meaning - a stable armed criminal group.
