Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick (1428-1471) - British statesman and military leader, one of the most powerful lords of England, received from his contemporaries the nickname of "kingmaker".
Being the 6th Earl of Salisbury, inherited by his wife the title line of the 16th Earl of Warwick. An active participant in the struggle for the English throne between the two lines of the royal dynasty - Lancaster and York (Wars of the Roses). Initially, a staunch supporter of the party of York, showed himself as a talented commander in the Battle of St. Albans in 1455 The victory Yorkists were able to control the King Henry VI of Lancaster dynasty. Military Merit Richard Neville has been appointed to the most responsible position in the British Army - the post of Captain of Calais. In 1458 Warwick was able to repel the attacks of the Spanish fleet in the last British base on the continent and became a celebrated hero in England.

In 1460 Warwick, one of the leaders of York, resumed hostilities against the Lancastrians. In 1461 after the Battle of Northampton and Taunton, it provides rise to power of Edward IV of York. For this service he receives from the vast possessions confiscated from Lancaster land barons, the admiral title and "the western sea guardian." First three years of the reign of Edward IV Warwick is in fact the head of state.

Since 1464 relations between Warwick and King Edward IV began to deteriorate. In matters of foreign policy Warwick stood for an alliance with the king of France, and Edward inclined towards an alliance with the Duke of Burgundy. An attempt in 1469 to remove completely Edward IV from power and run the country on behalf of the failed, and Warwick was forced to flee to France. In the same year he returned to England, over to the side of Lancaster, is released from the Tower of London and return the throne mad Henry VI. Thus Warwick again becomes the real ruler of the country with the title of "Deputy of the King." Edward IV York runs to Burgundy, but soon returned with a large army in several battles otvoovyvaet back his crown. In one of these battles (at Barnet) April 14, 1471 Warwick was killed.
