Medieval Germany was a large number of almost independent states only nominally united under the authority of the emperor. Among the Emperor's vassals had several dukes, counts and a few hundred other nobles, usually have their own private armies. For fighting nobles pledged by the Emperor's request to provide the armed forces or to pay an equivalent amount to the formation of a hired troops.
