In the Samurai armies there was a version of the banner (Nobori), which was the distinctive flag of the family clan and was carried out on the battlefield at the head of individual units. It was a long vertical panel, fastened to the L-shaped pole by means of cloth loops. The flag depicted a monk clan and often wrote characters with a hieroglyphic motto or quote from sacred Buddhist texts.
The standard-bearer has the standard equipment for ashigar: "lent armor" (okasi-gusoku) and a conical helmet (dzingas) with the family coat of arms of the lord. Of the items of outfit, the most important was the rice ration, which fell asleep in a long narrow bag (heyre-bucuro). This bag was divided into a multitude of diurnal portions, it was thrown over the shoulder and tied behind the back.
