The central event of the 15th century. Japan was the Onin War (1467-1477 gg.). This brutal feud led to the devastation of Kyoto and seriously weakened the strength of the ruling Ashikaga clan headed by the Shogun. Since that time head of the shogun government began to cynically manipulate the representatives of regional authorities - daimyo ( "great names"). Daimyo lords were major military and need large armies composed of skilled warriors. Since that time, there is the term "Ashigaru" to refer to the infantry (literally - "light legs"), indicating the lack of armor, shoes, and even weapons that had to get from the enemy in battle. Gradually, the most far-sighted and talented military leaders have come to realize what an important role their troops can play ashigaru. While some daimyo took to his troops undisciplined mob and offered to produce equipment in battle, others supplied them with armor, weapons and awarded ranks that provide unlimited devotion to his master ashigaru.
