EK castings A80 - Legate, II legion of Augustus. Rome, 1st century AD

All the fullness of military power in Rome was possessed by the Emperor. For direct control of the troops, he personally appointed higher military commanders - legates. Legates of the legions belonged to the estate of senators and often combined the command of the legion with the post of governor of the province. Then a legion of such a legate, as a rule, was quartered far away in order to save his superior from the temptation to use a subordinate unit to seize power in the provinces and betray the emperor, but this precaution did not always help that much.
The Legion of Augustus II was formed by Octavian in 43 BC. In the year 9 AD. After the death of the three Roman legions of Wara in the Teutoburg Forest, the legion was sent to Germany, where he camped in the Moguntiac area (modern Mainz). In 15, the legion took part in the Germanic expedition, in which the remains of 25 thousand Vara warriors were buried. During a violent storm, the legion lost all its wagon train. After the campaign, he camped in Argententate (modern Strasbourg). In 43 AD during the invasion of Britain II, the legion of Augustus was under the command of Titus Flavius ??Vespasian (9-79 AD), the future emperor. The Legion took part in 30 battles and proved to be one of the best. In subsequent years, the legion stood several camps in various parts of Britain. In 69, a part of the soldiers of the legion was supported by Vitellius and formed the backbone of his army in the battle of Cremona.
On the legacy is a "muscular" cuirass with a decor and an "attic" helmet with a plumage of ostrich feathers. The symbol of his rank is a narrow belt with golden brushes, a red tunic and a raincoat.
