A77 Centurion
ref. EK Castings A77
EK Castings A77 - Roman centurion, beg. 1st century AD
Most centurions were nominated from ordinary legionaries, gradually rising in rank in the centurium for ten or more years. During the attack, the centurion took the place to the right of the front rank of the centurium headed by him. The whole centurium was built in four rows of 20 legionnaires in each. If the centurium was defeated, the losses among the centurions were especially great, because they had to cover the retreat.
The title of the centurion can be identified by silver leggings and a silver amulet with the image of the Gorgon Medusa, strengthened on the chest clasp between the armor of the chain mail. A wide silver belt could also serve as an officer's distinction. The helmet-kulus does not yet have a transverse ridge, which later became a characteristic difference of centurions. The decoration of the helmet is two white goose feathers and a bunch of black horse hair. In battle, the centurions used the legionary shield-scutum.
