In May 1939, Mussolini concluded an agreement on a military alliance with Germany, known as the "Steel Pact." June 19, 1940 Italy enters the Second World War. The invasion of Italy in 1943 by the Allied forces leads to the removal of the "Duce" from power. Special unit of SS under the command of Otto Skorzeny saves Mussolini and delivers him to Germany. September 23, under the pressure of Hitler announced the creation of the Italian Social Republic with its capital in the city of Salo.
 
The basis of the National Republican Army (ENR) was four personnel divisions. The 1st division of the Alpine shooters "Monterosa" consisted of the 1st and 2nd Alpine regiments, the 1st Alpine art. regiment and support units.
The officer-standard-bearer in the rank of junior lieutenant is dressed in a gray-green uniform of 1940, a gray-green shirt and a tie. On the legs are black shoes with windings. Green buttonholes on the collar in the form of three flame tongues correspond to the alpine arrowheads. The steel gray-green helmet of the sample in 1933 is decorated with a traditional symbol of the Alpine shooters. The officers had a gold pompon with an eagle feather. On a brown belt with a shoulder harness holster with a semi-automatic pistol "Beretta" model 1934, caliber 9 mm.
The new army banner was an ordinary Italian tricolor. In the center is a silver eagle with outstretched wings, holding in its claws golden fascia. The shaft is light blue. The top is in the form of a golden fascia with a silver hatchet.
