EK castings N57 - Sergeant fuseliers line infantry - France, 1809

The basis of the French army were the regiments of the linear infantry. This type of infantry was intended for action in close combat formations. Each line regiment consisted of four (sometimes 2-3) operating and one spare battalion, remaining in the regimental depot. The battalion consisted of four Fusel, Grenadier and Voltiger companies. The fuseliers formed the basis of the regiment (the "company of the center"), the grenadiers were the best soldiers and strike force, and the voltigers were selective archers who could operate in a loose order. The combination of these types of infantry allowed the linear regiment to act on the battlefield according to the situation.
The sergeant is dressed in a dark blue single-breasted coat, often worn in a hike instead of a parade uniform. The collar and cuffs were usually of the same color as the frock coat. Folds are red, decorated with blue stars - a characteristic difference of the fuselers. Pantaloons and a vest from a white cloth. On their feet are shoes and black high leggings with brass buttons. White leather sashes are stitched along the edges (as in the Guards). The bayonet scabbard is placed on the saddle of the cartridge bag. The infantry half-saber in the fuselage companies was worn only by corporals and sergeants. Signs of sergeant's distinction were diagonal gold stripes on a red lining on both sleeves. The black felt shako has a brass rhombic plate, a white etchette and a gold sergeant's galloon over the upper rim.
