Genpei war (1180-1185) Got its name from the combination of characters, denoting the Minamoto and Taira. Competition for power between Minamoto and Taira was extremely cruel. Both ancient clan descended from the imperial dynasties were powerful enough. Representatives of the Taira clan had close ties with the imperial court and were known as brave warriors, talented artists and writers. Their opponents from the Minamoto family were uncouth louts.
