Marcus Aurelius Mausaeus Valerius Carausius (Marcus Aurelius Mausaeus Valerius Carausius) is a Gallo-Roman military commander and self-proclaimed emperor of the rebellious Britain in 287-293.
Carausius, by origin, was a Gallic manapiens. Being a talented warlord, he skillfully led the troops both on land and at sea. Commanding the Roman fleet in Gessarik (Boulogne), he successfully fought against rebelling baudiads - rebellious peasants and slaves who waged an armed struggle against Rome in Gaul. Since Carausius was well versed in naval affairs, he was instructed to command the Roman fleet in the English Channel. His task was to protect the imperial (Gallic and Batavian) coasts from attacks by German sea robbers. In these years (285-286), the emperor Diocletian appointed the commander Maximian his co-ruler. Managing the western part of the empire, Maximian suspected Kauruzia of conspiracy with the Germans and illegal enrichment, and ordered him to be killed. Carausius sailed to Britain and in 287, with the support of the fleet and soldiers, proclaimed himself Augustus. After several unsuccessful attempts to eliminate it, in 289 Diocletian and Maximian were forced to recognize Kauruzia as a co-operator. The Empire of Karauzia included Northern Gaul and Roman Britain.
In 293, Emperor Diocletian introduced the tetrarchy - the system of managing the empire by four co-rulers. Diocletian had in direct submission Thrace, Egypt and Asia; The galleries ruled Illyria and the Danube borders; Maximian directly ruled Italy and Africa; Constantius received in control of Gaul, Britain and Spain. In 293 Constantius put an end to the British rule of Carausius, having defeated him in the battle of Boulogne. Carausius himself was killed by his own treasurer, Allekt, who proclaimed himself the new emperor-usurper of Britain. Guy Allett ruled for another three years as a tyrant until he was defeated in battle and killed during the flight. Roman rule in Britain was restored.
Clothing and equipment of Karauzia are intended to emphasize his imperious aspirations. The expensive helmet of the cavalry "sports" type is covered with silver and trimmed with gilded bronze. The helmet is crowned with a huge comb of feathers, painted in a purple color. The white tunic is trimmed with colored ornament along the edge of the hem and sleeves. Plated shell of gilded bronze plates is worn on a hood with a skirt and mantles of yellow bands with a red rim. Leggings are made of silver-plated bronze with gilded relief figures of Mars. Shoes in romano-British style of soft purple leather with gold embroidery and buckle. Imperial grandeur emphasizes a purple belt with a gold edging and a purple fimbriae cloak. Sword in a bronze scabbard decorated with insets of red and green glass. In his hand, as a symbol of power, a magnificent gilded signum,
